In the mid-1800s, Ocean City was a small fishing village that was accessible by ferry and stage coach. By the late 1800s, tourists could arrive by railroad. In 1933, a severe storm (some say hurricane) created the inlet that now separates Ocean City from Assateague Island. With this new access from the bay to the ocean, Ocean City was unknowingly on its way to becoming on the the top beach cities on the East coast, a sport fishing destination and eventually the White Marlin Capital of the World.
